I proposed Kathak Meets Steve Reich as part of the CoLab 2017 festival at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and dance.
I got the idea while watching a performance of Reich's Clapping Music followed by a dance video of my Kathak teacher performing tatkar (kathak foot-taps). Being a kathak dancer and also a composition student, I made the connection between kathak foot-taps and the concept of Clapping Music. I asked myself, "What would if we were to tap Clapping Music instead of clapping it?" I realised that this little idea could be realised and extended in CoLab. I wrote a pitch for the project in which I also expressed my interest in choreographing Kathak on other pieces of minimalist music. I titled it Kathak Meets Steve Reich, because I wanted two very dissimilar yet two similar concepts meet before in a performance. I wanted them to be equal and influence each other. I wanted them to respond to each other in the same way two people do, when they MEET for the first time.
