Steve Reich (b. 1936) is an American composer of minimalist music. He is said to be one of the pioneers of this genre which emerged in the 1960's. Minimalist music is music that makes use of simple material, repetition, pulses or phasing.
Steve Reich's music is characterised by pulses, cross rhythms and phasing. His music often starts sparsely but builds up to dense textures formed out of small riffs. We used this concept to write our own Reich inspired piece of music. Steve Reich's most famous pieces include Clapping Music, New York Counterpoint, Different Trains and Music for 18 Musicians.
We also made two arrangements of Clapping Music- One for two clapping musicians and one Kathak dancer and second for many kathak dancers and our instrument ensemble.
